The Fate of Child Brides

To most of us, when we hear about child marriages, it probably does not make sense. To some of us, it is not real. However, statistics indicate that this problem is more real than we imagine. 1 in 9 girls from developing countries are married before the age of 15. Some of these girls are married off at age 9. 1 in 3 girls in developed countries are married before age 18. As a result, about 14 million girls under the age of 18 are denied their rights to education worldwide.  Although statistics indicate that this problem is worse in some countries than others, this problem is worse in developing countries.
In South Asia for instance, 46% of girls are married before age 18. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 38% of the girls are married off before age 18. In Latin America and the Caribbean, 21% of girls are married off before age 18. In East Asia and the Pacific, 18% of the girls are married off before age 18. In the Middle East and North Africa, 18% of girls are married before age 18. In central Europe, 11% of girls are married before age 18 (UNICEF, 2013).

While child brides has been an acceptable practice in many countries, modern societies have tried to protect children by insisting they get opportunities to education in order to live a better life. The United Nations' the organization to which most countries who seek to promote social justice and welfare of all stipulates in Universal Declaration of Human Rights, that there are "equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family." The right to education, the right to shelter and the food are considered basic to each and every one. Unfortunately, child brides are denied education which is fundamental to attaining the other basic rights.
As stated by the UNICEF, most of these child brides end up in poverty, less educated and with serious health issues, for themselves and their children. According to studies, girls age 15-19 are twice as likely to die during pregnancy or child birth compared to those over age 20. Girls younger than 15 are five times more likely to lose their lives during child birth. When a woman is under 18, her child is 60% more likely to die in its first year of life than a baby born to a mother over 18 years.

In addition to this, countries with the highest child marriage rates have the lowest rates of educated women. A country that denies women education does not only deny these women a healthy and better livelihood, it also denies itself human power that would have gone into its development. It is no wonder that countries with the most child marriages happen to be the poorest.
For those of us who care, we should do something about it. While it is beyond our mission to rid the society of this cruel practice, those of us at WISO do whatever little we can to help protect children from marriages that destroy their lives. With your donations, we seek out girls, one at a time, support her education and put her to a road to a better life. We use donations to pay their tuition, bills in a sheltered environment until they are able to go out as independent and responsible citizens. Yet, even with our meager support, we are hopeful that with your support, we can make a difference in a number of girls’ lives. Visit us at www.wiso2011.org to learn what we do and to support us by a donation of your choosing. We count on your support.  Make one girls Christmas true by presenting her a gift to education.

A Pastor Who Raped Girls claims they had the Devil in Them?

A pastor charged with rape of girls claims that the girls had devils inside them. Really? This man should never have been a pastor in the first place. Members of his congregation should have seen the red flags and said something before this happened. Read more here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/13/jacoby-kindred-pastor-rape-girls-devil-inside-them_n_4439216.html

Stories like these are becoming more common in our society than we can bear. When those in positions of leadership forget their responsibility to uphold a high moral standard, we know that our society is living under the worst moral decadence. Moral decay happens when society decided that they do not care what happens to their neighbor, and anyone else. Soon, everyone does not care about friends and even family members. This is not to mention the apathy often displayed towards the consequences of such behavior.

Unfortunately, as social being, humans have to remember that we are moral being. It is in our human self to create norms and to choose those norms that bring the highest good in us as well as the highest pleasure. These values in themselves are not as satisfying unless they are experienced within family and friendly relations. It is for this reason that norms and morality must be upheld. It is for this reason that we frown at a pastor who assaults children under his care, or a family member assaulting a family member. There is something very, very wrong with that picture.

I have wondered why abuse happens in the wrong places. A pastor abusing children under his care is one of the gross things one has to hear. It should be a law that anyone in leadership who is guilty of abuse should not only be convicted, they should never be allowed in leadership positions ever again. If this was ensured, we would have the most vulnerable members of our community protected. Children, boys and girl, and the elderly, and of course women need to be protected from pedophiles.

After you read this narrative and care about stopping leaders who do this to their subjects for whom they are expected to uphold the highest degree of moral uprightness, we ask that you join us in assisting an abused survivor to redirect her/ his life. Join us at www.wiso2011.org.  Support us as we expose these pedophiles and how to stop them.

An Appeal for Girls in Africa

Hello everyone. Today, I make an appeal to you for the girls in Africa. Join us in ensuring that few girls drop out of school due to simple basic needs. Education is not only key to a better life; it is a step to opportunities in life. It is a basic need for general survival and a life of non-dependence. We may not meet all their needs, but taking care of a simple aspect of their lives goes a long way. It takes just one simple gesture and one caring person to make a difference.

There are girls in Africa who face serious sanitation problems. They drop out of school because they do not have sanitary pads to wear while going to school. They get embarrassed during menstruation and cannot bear the misery of being in school without pads. Because these girls come from communities where matters related to sexuality and even reproduction are rarely discussed, they end up dropping out of school.

My experience with these girls has taught me that they are as smart as any girl or boy out there. All they need are conditions to enable their education to take place. Whenever I visit Africa, I go to school and talk to the teachers and girls to find out who has dropped out of school and why. This fact has been reinforced by studies that have shown how many girls drop out of school in order to get married and to avoid embarrassment when they reach puberty because they fear to be embarrassed when they undergo menstruation periods.

Puberty and menstruation are natural experiences. There girls should not feel inhibited by natural conditions to not go to school. I wish governments in Africa would do a lot to help these girls in these matters. Unfortunately, very little is being done. This is where my WISO organization comes in and where your support comes in.

As a non-profit organization, all we are doing is fundraise and buy pads which we distribute to girls in various schools to ensure that they don’t drop out of school for such a flimsy reason. With support, we hope to equip each girl with pads to take them a year. We can then build on this yearly. There are many schools in Africa as you know. So we hope to begin this initiative in one country and encourage group formation to continue the program. Hopefully, this can make a change in some of these girls’ lives. If we get enough support, we can help them in other areas of need.

It is for this reason we need your support. We solicit grants but these are hard to come by. We count on individual support more because these come from the heart. We do not claim to end their problems. We can’t. Just a simple gesture to keep them going on with their struggles is enough for a start. That is how I see it. Whatever gift you give us, $5, $10, $20 $100 all count and will definitely make a huge change in these girls’ lives. We count on your help and hope you can also help spread the word. If you donate any amount $20 and up, you receive a T-shirt or a beautiful tote bag from us. You will also receive pictures of our distribution events to these girls.

Visit our Facebook and webpage to support us. As I indicated earlier, the need is much more than we know. Visit www.wiso2011.org and click the donation button. Oh our Facebook also has the donation button. You can contact us at wiso2011@gmail.com for details on how serious the problem is or for any other questions you have. We appreciate your help. www.wiso2011.org

All Eligible Individuals Should be able to Drive- Male or Female

WISO stands with women in Saudi Arabia for standing against cultural abuse!!! Yes, indeed, it is cultural abuse to discriminate against anyone for any reason. Gender is not a reason to prevent a woman from driving. We at WISO support these ...women's efforts to claim their rights to choose, to independence, freedom and to respect.

WISO urges men who love these women to support them in this important cause. We live in a modern society where technology including cars have become a necessity to success. Respecting your mothers, wives and daughters as fellow human beings is the greatest gift Allah asks of you.

We ask all those who stand with these women to like this comment. Support in any form is necessary to motivate action. These women need moral support to prevail. They have taken the most significant step. Let us stand with them.

The world cannot just stand and watch. Express your opinion.

When it come to doing the right thing, age, race and gender are not factors

It was humbling to read this letter from a grandfather to his daughter about knowing how to treat humanity. I can explain it better, so I ask you read it yourself. The feeling is great and I wish we had many people in the world who would do the right thing for the sake of right. Grandpa, you are my hero, and indeed an inspiration to all of us. A rapist walks free for commiting "nonviolent rape? Horrendous!!!!

A rapist walks free for committing a non-violent rape? Horrendous!! What is the world coming to? If those who are sane cannot make sensible decisions, we ought to be worried about our children, our parents and ourselves.

We trust that those we elect in leadership roles would lead us if their responsibility is to protect us they should do this. Last evening when I watched the news about the fourteen year old who committed suicide had been raped by her teacher  who was then sentenced to only thirty day, i was disgusted. It is horrendous for a rapist of a minor to be given such lenient sentence especially since his actions led to the girl committing suicide.

I think a judge who makes such an unforgivable decision should be relieved of his or her duties. We cannot trust such an individual to protect our children or even to lead. Bad judgement is equivalent to no judgement. I believe those who care should pressure such a leader to leave office. Read more here and be your own judge.

Your Dignity is Yours to Keep

Human nature is full of surprises. Sometimes, those who we expect to love us are the one that hurt us very bad. Those who love us are the ones who abuse us. Why is that? Mysterious huh! They are the closest to us.

It is for this reason that I believe human nature is a mystery. We tend to want to call those individual who behave in that way socio-paths or psycho or sick or whatever comes to our mind in an effort to explain these behaviors. It is difficult for the abused to explain away behavior that is hurtful. It is traumatic for the abused to dismiss their experience and indeed it is sad if the victim is blamed for the abuse they face. But unfortunately, our society tends to do just that. We blame the abused for the suffering they are exposed to. Why do we do that?

One thing is for sure! If you have been in an abused situation or relationship, never ever blame yourself no matter what others may think. No one in their right mind would put themselves in a situation where they would get abused or hurt. We always count on the sanity of humans and trust that those we get close to will treat us as humans with dignity. What others think is irrelevant.

Always remember that you still have the power and the upper hand in the whole situation. In spite of everything, you are always in control of yourself. Never give up on yourself no matter what. Never play victim and never give up on the power you still have even when you may appear powerless. Michael J Fox once shared great words of wisdom. He reminds us all that “One's dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but it can never be taken away unless it is surrendered.” ― Michael J. Fox

Your dignity is yours to keep to hold on and to count on. Keep it and be proud of it regardless of what you go through. Peace!!

No oppression is so heavy or lasting as that which is inflicted by the perversion and exorbitance of legal authority.

Always resist injustice in its various forms. It is important to remember that great leaders who brought us freedom fought really hard to resist injustice. Now it is our turn. We cannot just sit and hope things will change. We have to be the change we need. We have to act out what we want our world and lives to look like.If you are unhappy with the situation do something about it. Strategize, on how to improve the situation in the future.

Confront Your abuse to end the cycle!

“... you don't have to wait for someone to treat you bad repeatedly. All it takes is once, and if they get away with it that once, if they know they can treat you like that, then it sets the pattern for the future.”
Jane Green, Bookends

Dont allow abuse because it is going to be repeated again and again. Confront it the first time you notice it in order to stop the cycle.

God is love, gracious, emphathy, kind, all powerful and truly caring

Yes, God is all the good things we want in our life. He is love, kind, caring gracious, a listener, and truly great!! God is the friend we want, the great parent that we wish for, the ultimate guy you rarely find out there. He is everything right?

To have God in life is to have hope, a purpose, something to live for. It is to value life, and to value yourself. Jesus once said; love your neighbor as yourself. It is difficult to love your neighbor if you do not love yourself. So God reminds us to love ourselves first.

Loving ourselves means a lot. It means making the right choices in our lives. This is not easy, but to be able to make the right choice, you have to have a plan, a purpose of life and the courage to make these choices even if they are tough. For instance, when you realize a friend you thought you had has been betraying you; sometimes the best thing to do is just ignore them. You know, friendship is two way traffic. If one does not reciprocate, it makes no sense to hang in only to get hurt. Moving on may be a difficult choice but it is always the right one. In fact, moving on will give you the opportunity to make new friends. I believe, God would appreciate a man or woman who makes their own principled and smart choices.

I also believe that since God is love, compassion, gracious and all kind, he would appreciate if you anyone declined to abide by abusive teachings. God make us into rational beings. He gave us brains to seek wisdom with and to ask the right questions. He would expect that we would say no to anyone who would tell us to kill ourselves for their sake. He would expect that we would not allow our health to be compromised just because we have to obey others. He would not want us to be sheepish in accepting everything we are told without question. True, God would be unhappy with us if we did not use the intellect he created all of us with in inquiring about issues and concerns in our society.

So, do not be misled that God enjoys when we suffer. He does not. He cries with us and would love for us to make the choice not to allow ourselves to be mistreated or abused. Let us all do the right thing. Let us not allow anyone to abuse us, no matter who they are. And let us not watch as those we love get abused. Gain the courage to say no. Seek help if you must. Let's all try to emulate God. God's virtues are compassionate, loving, kindness and justice for all. Read more here..

Scriptures that Demean Anyone aren't God's

It is true!! Many a times we tend to believe what is written in the scripture. And we ought to. This is because we have been brought up to believe that what is written in the scripture is sacred, the actual word of God. As humans however, we always seek consistency and logic. Therefore, when we encounter contradictions we wonder why and whether God would contradict himself. Indeed, it does not make sense. But we need to remember one thing. Like any book, scripture must be read in whole in order to understand the message that is being communicated to us.

I respect all religions in the world. I tend to believe that God has a way to communicate to everyone in this wide world. God as God is capable of sending several messengers to his people in different languages and in different cultures. It is therefore not important to claim that one way of religious experience is better or superior to another; otherwise we get caught up in ethnocentrism.

While I appreciate all religions for the great wisdom they have, I am often disturbed by teachings that undermine other human beings. Truly, these cannot be from God. After all scriptures say, God love all human beings. Whenever there is a scripture that sanction discrimination of others or abuse of certain individual, I tend to doubt the source. It is important to remember that most religions emerge in cultures. Sometimes, these cultures may taint God's message. In situations where there is a message that contradict God as you understand him, pass it on as a culture because you can bet it is.

Seekers of wisdom will always find this to be true. Be a seeker of wisdom. Do not use religion to abuse or demean anyone especially children and women in your lives. God does not allow this. Sex abuse in the Military and then A Teen Trafficking Fellow Students?

This week has been depressing!! I think the whole month has been depressing indeed!! If you have been paying attention, the case of sexual abuse in the military has been in the media now for a while. There is an ongoing problem with sexual assault in the U.S. military. The Department of Defense estimates there are about 19,000 sexual assaults in the military per year. Of the 1,108 cases filed for an investigation, only 575 cases were processed.  Of the cases processed, only 96 went to court-martial. this is in spite of the fact that there exist rules and laws in the books to prevent sexual abuse.
The US Army Study Guide defines sexual assault as:
"Sexual assault is a crime defined as intentional sexual contact, characterized by use of force, physical threat or abuse of authority or when the victim does not or cannot consent. Sexual Assault includes: Rape; Non consensual Sodomy (oral or anal sex); Indecent Assault (unwanted, inappropriate sexual contact or fondling); and Attempts to commit these acts." (See  Army Study Guide: "Army Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program").
The 2005 Defense Task Force on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Military Service Academies report states:
"Within the military community, the term sexual assault carries a more far-reaching meaning that encompasses everything from violent sexual acts such as rape, forcible sodomy, and assault with intent to commit rape or sodomy, to indecent assault. While indecent assault connotes violence, violence is not a prerequisite of the crime. Indecent assault can be a mere sexual touching that occurs without the consent of the person who is touched."[ (Report of the Defense Task Force on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Military Service Academies)

Why is this? Why are the laws being ignored and why is no one taking a step to ensure they violators are held responsible? It is as if the behavior is tolerated as if it was the norm. And did you hear what some Congressmen  said about it? It was not only embarrassing to watch, it was sad to see adults men try to explain the problem away as if they could not do anything about it. One congressman said - it is about hormones in teenagers? Really? is an adult man in a leadership position can speak like a child is disgraceful to this nation and to leadership as a whole.  WATS more here about the congress discussion. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2013/05/new-incident-leads-military-to-re-train-and-re-credential-all-sexual-assault-prevention-coordinators/

As I am still disgusted by what transpired, I read about this teenager girl. It reminded me of the last article I wrote. Watch out for abuse, it may just be happening under your nose.
This is a very sad story. A teenage is involved in trafficking girls to her clients. While most may be angry at her, it is our society that is encouraging this behavior. This is a pointer to moral decadence that is now characteristic of our society.

We need to wake up and reorganize society for our children. We need to prevent abuse and human trafficking by re institution clear and specific laws and ensuring that we enforce them stringently to deter potential culprits.  Our religious leaders have a responsibility to do their communities the right thing. Help change our communities so morals can be restored.

Community leaders, need to support religious leaders by ensuring that legal statutes are enforced and that the basic human rights of those who are abused and marginalized are restored. Just saying. Read more about the teen trafficker and writ your comment. We all can learn from you. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/06/05/18775939-cheerleader-accused-of-prostituting-younger-student?lite

Well, I hope there is some hope here. We all need to do something wherever we are to prevent these beastly behavior. Remember to visit our site www.wiso2011.org to support us in our effort to help prevent abuse and to shelter those in need for a place to stay as they transition from abuse. Watch out for Abuse: it is happening under our nose!

When we say abuse is ongoing in our communities, some think it is probably not true. This is just to remind us that we should stay alert and see if we can help some of us to overcome it.

I am sharing this clip of a Kenyan woman who was abused in the United States as a slave just to remind you to be on the look out. Watch out for red flags and do what is needed to stop it.

If You Suspect Beastly Behavior, You are Probably Right - Act

Yes, when beastly behavior is explained away as sickness, or mental illness, one cannot but feel sick in return. The recent case of abuse of three women by Castro for 10 to 15 years is the worst of the human forms of abuse. When a human being chooses to do what Castro did to the three human beings, something is truly wrong. It is for this reason that I urge each of us to watch out for girls or women who disappear. There are many beats like Castor in our society. It is our duty to watch out for them and to protect those we love.

Talking of our responsibility, it is truly sad to imagine that these women lived in captivity for over ten years in a free country such as the United States. It is even more devastating to know that they were held right under our own nose. While we want to rush and blame the police force for not doing enough to protect these women, we must always remember that police force can only help us if we are helpful to them as well. When we observe, suspect something is wrong; it is our responsibility to follow through by acting on our instincts. Three lives would have been saved if someone in the neighborhood had found the sealed windows suspicious and called for an investigation; these women would probably have been saved many years ago.

Did you know that reports of missing persons have increased six fold in the past 25 years, from roughly 150,000 in 1980 to about 900,000 this year? While the increase is due in part to the growing population, the number is still astounding. About 2,300 Americans are reported missing every day. In 2001 alone about 840,279people were reported missing persons. This is an epidemic. We need to be our neighbor’s watchdogs. With such an alarming statistics of many children and adults disappearing from our communities, we have a lot of work to do to protect those we love. Let’s reclaim our humanity. Let's get to work. In your opinion, what kind of suspiciou things should we look for if we are to uncover abuse, kidnappings, and suscpicious behavior? I would like to hear from you.

A Hug is Worth a Smile!!!

Do you sense sadness, depression, desperation in a friend, neighbor, family member? I do all the time!! Don't just pass by as if nothing is wrong? Something could well be very wrong? Did you know a hug can change all that? Yes, indeed. A hug is worth a smile. it could be worth much more you know! If only we could show others concern, care and love,  we could change lives and probably save some.

During our cookout event, we extend ourselves to friends, neighbors, and even our enemies. As we gather, we plan to gesture care, love and concern for others. It is as easy as extending a hug to the other person. Come join us as we hug each other, forgive each other, and listen to each other. Come share about how else to improve in our efforts to care. Those basic human qualities are central to who we are as social beings.

Bring a friend, let's eat together, and help give away information that will help those in abused circumstances. Be part of this!! The feeling is great!!! I hope to see more of you there. Elm Street park is the venue. Hopefully the weather will be great!!
If you cannot make it, don’t worry about it. Extend a hug to your family, friends, and neighbors wherever you are. Let's promote peace. - Peace.

Why all this homelessness !!!

Homelessness is a matter of concern anywhere in the world. However, it is a particular cause for alarm, concern and even shame when it occurs in the richest of the nations. Sadly, homelessness is a significant problem in most developed countries. Accurate statistics on the level of homelessness are hard to come by. In part, this is because definitions of homelessness vary. It includes not only tho...se who are living on the streets or in shelters and hostels but also those who are living in temporary accommodation or in housing that is unfit for human habitation.

Estimates of the number of people without homes in the United States vary from 230,000 to 3 million, including between 50,000 and 500,000 children. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimated in 1999 that "there are at least 600,000 homeless men, women, and children in the United States on any given night," adding that roughly one-third of this population is composed of families with children. In its 1997 position paper on eliminating homelessness, the American Public Health Association (APHA) noted that "as many as 7.4 percent of Americans (13.5 million people) may have experienced homelessness at some time in their lives."

Homelessness increased in the 1990s, and the fastest growing segment of the homeless population was homeless families. A wide variety of factors contribute to homelessness, but the main categories are: structural problems and individual factors that increase vulnerability. Structural problems include a lack of affordable housing, changes in the industrial economy leading to unemployment, inadequate income supports, the denstitutionalization of patients with mental health problems, and the erosion of family and social support. Added to this are factors that increase an individual's vulnerability, such as physical or mental illness, disability, substance abuse, domestic violence, or job loss. Reducing homelessness will mean addressing issues such as these. A little bit helps! Let us all join hands and together we will make a difference!! Shelter is a basic right!! We should fight to have a home just as we fight to have food and education. It is a human right that we should all feel morally obliged to demand from our societies. We can do it, one person at at time.

Join us. Invite your friend to join us to help one at a time to get a shelter, a safe place to lay their head. In the streets many children are exposed to abuse. Safe homes help alleviate abuse. Just saying.

If only the abortion debate was about babies?

If the debate about abortion was about babies, I would certainly be on board. Who wants babies killed? I don’t think anyone in their right mind would want anyone destroying life unnecessarily. Life must be saved at all cost! Unfortunately, the abortion debate emerges out of serious concerns about health and morality. It is for this reason that before one dismisses this debate, it is a good idea to ponder question at the core of this discussion.

First, it is true life is at the core of this debate. The question that needs to be asked is: whose life is at stake? Quite often anti- abortionists are persuasive in defending the life of the baby. As vulnerable potential human beings, babies’ lives must be protected. However, sometimes, the mother’s life may be at stake as well. In such a situation one is left wondering which life to protect: - the mother’s or the babies. This can be a very difficult decision, better left to the individuals affected.

Second, advocates of abortion have argued for cases such as pregnancies occurring through rape, incest, cases of moral abuse that concern us at WISO. Well, while we condemn all forms of abuse we do not endorse abortion as we feel this in another personal decision. We hope and advise that anyone who finds herself in a situation where pregnancy occurred during abuse – incest, rape or such abusive experience, the mother of the child makes the decision to give the child to foster care. However, we insist that this is a personal decision.

We however discourage abuse especially sexual assault and incest. If you witness, suspect any form of abuse, we advise that you call the cops or call this number.

Religion and culture has been cited often times in matters related to abortion.  As a professor of religion, I am aware that there are numerous ways of interpreting the scripture to justify certain forms of abuse – domestic violence, non-performance of abortions etcetera. As controversial as these questions are, it is important to know that they are about real life. The women affected are often our mothers, sisters, wives, and even daughters. Men who care would not let their women go through abuse.

Each one of us needs to figure out what really matters! We would hope that social justice would be the principles that guide one’s decision Remembers to share and to hug a friend as this is one main ways of altering a situation.

Do not forget to visit our Facebook and share your experience and of course our website at www.wiso2011.org to see how you can help change one life at a time. Until next time, help stop an abuse, as that will give you the greatest feeling in life. –

 Chao

WISO President.

Should Rapists be treated like murderers!!!

This is horrendous!!! It is time that rapists are held responsible in order to stop this recurring behavior. It is our responsibility as humans to discourage this behavior if we notice, hear about it or suspect something!Rapists are like murders because if the victim does not end up dying, her life is often ruined forever!! This unbecoming behavior speaks a lot about our moral decadence. when we get to that point where we condone horrendous behavior such as this, we need to realize that something is very wrong in our moral fabric. moral agents such as pastors, imams gurus and others, need to take this as a serious challenge to their responsibility.

I urge everyone to do something! Yes, even a phone call can save life. If you do not know what to do, give those of us the means to help educate various communities about abuse! Support us in any way you can - by sharing stories, experiences, and ways to stop this behavior. Go onto our face book and see how you can help. Our blog will begin a series of educational notes to help identify an abuser and how to get help. We are together in this and with your support, we can do a lot to reach a large community around the world. Your comments have been inspiring but we have to find ways of stopping horrendous forms of abuse that occur around the world. This poor girl did not have a chance!!! Our condolences go to her family. VAWA Bill Signed into Law- Hooray!!!

March looks bright for women. We can make it even bright! The signing of the VAWA Bill into law is a huge step into ensuring that our women - daughters, mothers, wives, aunts - and indeed all women are treated as human beings with rational capability to make their own decisions. These women who make more than half of the world’s population need to be respected and to be protected from domestic and other cultural legitimized violence.

We can all ensure that we do something to ensure that no girl child, daughter, sister or our neighbors daughter is exposed to domestic violence. Yes, we can do something about it. If you sustect that something is not right about any woman's situation, you are probably right. You can do something, by first asking if she needs to talk, hugging her and proceed to do the necessary. Calling for help is most important. You can do it.

At WISO, we help guide us on how to do this. Let’s have our girls and women live a great life because they deserve it. They are human, worth of every respect and right to be treated with dignity. - just saying! -  Visit our website and see what we do. We are always evolving and hope to do a lot towards combating any form of abuse against all especially women because they are the most vulnerable.

President - WISO

The Fight to end FGM

Refreshing new developments!!! We must keep forging ahead.  See below

END FGM European Campaign
Dear supporters,
We hope that you are having a great 2013 so far! The movement for ending FGM is growing and going international (UN resolution adopted in December) and we are busily preparing for the finale of the ART FOR ACTION tour in Brussels next month! It certainly feels like the air is changing and we are moving closer to seeing concrete action! Enjoy the update and stay updated via our social media feed on Facebook and Twitter.
END FGM team
Highlights

The UN resolution “Intensifying efforts for the elimination of female genital mutilations” was adopted by the General Assembly on 20 December 2012. Read our call to the EU in advance of this historic resolution here.

Important Dates

6 February: International Day of Zero Tolerance to female genital mutilation
27 February: Art for Action: Ending Female Genital Mutilation seminar and gala in Brussels

EU Developments

The European Parliament written declaration calling on the EU and its Member States to sign and ratify the Council of Europe Convention on violence against women has not been adopted yet. Out of 377 signatures that are needed for the written declaration to be adopted, only 260 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have signed. ACTION: You can support our call by contacting your national MEPs directly by email. The last opportunity for MEPs to sign will be the next plenary session on 6 February. Contact us for more information.

The European Commission is expected to launch a consultation in March to develop a set of policies on FGM. This development has come after a long engagement of the END FGM Campaign and, most recently, a constructive expert meeting with European Commission officials, our partners and other NGOs from across Europe.

The EU Council Conclusions on Combating Violence against Women, and the Provision of Support Services for Victims of Domestic Violence were adopted on 6 December 2012. The Council calls on the European Commission and member states to consider developing a European Strategy on violence against women and the EU to consider signing, ratifying and implementing the Council of Europe Convention on violence against women.

In addition, the European Parliament released its Report on the situation of fundamental rights in the European Union 2010 – 2011, reiterating the call to the Commission to deliver a strategy on violence against women, and the member states to address the issue in a comprehensive manner.

In its EU Presidency Programme, Ireland has confirmed that it will address violence against women in the context of the Rights and Citizenship programme. Ireland also committed to ensure a strong EU position at the UN Commission on the Status of Women 2013.

On 29 January, Members of the European Parliament joined Eve Ensler, founder of the One Billion Rising movement, and danced to end violence against women in the European Parliament. The End FGM Campaign team met Eve and gifted her a brooch containing the signed rose petals. We will be rising with the rest of Brussels to demand an end to violence against women on 14 February. Find out more here.

Dear Avaaz community,

A 23-year-old student has died after being gang raped on a bus for hours. This is the last straw in the global war on women. Join massive protests in India, and call on the government to strengthen laws and launch a major public education campaign to challenge and shame the grotesque attitudes that led to this violence:

Sign the petition
She was a 23-year-old physical therapy student who boarded a bus in Delhi last month. Six men locked the door, and savagely raped her for hours, including with a metal rod. They dumped her naked in the street, and after bravely fighting for her life, she died last weekend.

Across India, people are responding in massive protests to say enough is enough. In India a woman is raped every 22 minutes, and few see justice. Globally, a staggering 7 in 10 women will be physically or sexually abused in their lifetime. This horror in Delhi is the last straw -- it's 2013, and the brutal, venal, global war on women must stop. We can start by drawing the line in India.

The government is accepting public comments for the next 48 hours. We urgently need both stronger law enforcement and a massive public education program to change the grotesque but common male attitudes that permit violence against women. If 1 million of us join the call for action, we can help make this young woman's horror the last straw, and the beginning of a new hope:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/end_indias_war_on_women/?bJoUeab&v=20663

The ringleader of the woman's rapists coldly says she deserved it because she dared to stand up to him. Blaming the victim and other outrageous attitudes are found across society, including in the police who continually fail to investigate rape. Such views repress women and corrupt men everywhere. Massively funded public education campaigns have radically shifted social behaviour on drunk driving and smoking, and can impact the treatment of women. Tackling the root causes of India’s rape epidemic is vital, alongside better laws and faster legal processes.

Advertising in India is relatively cheap, so a significant funding commitment could blanket airwaves in multiple media markets for a sustained period of time. The ads should target male subcultures where conservative misogyny thrives, directly challenging and shaming those attitudes, ideally using messengers like popular sports figures that carry authority with the audience.

We have just 24 hours to influence the official Commission set up to find ways to crack down on India's wave of sexual violence. If we can show real success in shifting attitudes in India, the model can be applied to other countries. The money spent will more than pay for itself by reducing poverty and promoting development, since treatment and empowerment of women has been identified as one of the greatest single drivers of social and economic progress. Click to send a message directly to the Indian government:

From opposing the stoning of women in Iran, to supporting the reproductive rights of women in Morocco, Uzbekistan and Guatemala, to lobbying for real action to counter the growing 'rape trade' in trafficked women and girls, our community has been on the front lines of the fight to end the war on women. This new year begins with new resolve in India.

With hope and determination,

Emma, Ricken, Luis, Meredith, Iain, Ian, Marie, Michelle, Alaphia, Allison and the rest of the Avaaz team
